SS Hope

SS Hope was a hospital ship operated by Project HOPE (USA).[1]

Hope was originally built as a US Navy hospital ship, USS Consolation. Consolation was donated to Project Hope in 1958, and served from 1960 until 1974, when she was retired. Hope was not replaced, and Project HOPE emphasis switched entirely to land-based operations. It completed 11 voyages between 1960 and 1973, traveling to Indonesia, South Vietnam, Peru, Ecuador, Guinea, Nicaragua, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Jamaica, and Brazil.

I installed a 1701 audiometer in the hull of the SS Hope while it was docked in New York City shortly before she was retired. The IAC 1200A series sound booth that was also there was braced in a manner that I had never seen before. It had to endure storms at sea and stay put.
