Model 162
This Grason Stadler model 162 Speech Audiometer recently appeared on eBay. It was one of the last few production runs for this instrument: manufactured, tested and calibrated in February 1970 and the inspection tag is signed by Merrill Bancroft and Bill O'Flahaven, both of whom I worked with for many years. More information regarding the 162 is available under Vintage products and Nostalgia. The rear photo is not that clear but the serial number appears to be 596 or possibly 598.
The 162 Speech Audiometer was a two-channel instrument for presenting live or recorded spoken material at controlled levels. It permitted monaural and binaural tests with earphones as well as sound-field tests with one or two loudspeakers to determine "speech reception threshold", "discrimination loss for speech", and scores on various special tests. It included two test channels, two hearing loss controls, two input attenuators, phonograph, microphone, masking noise source, monitor VU meter, left and right earphones, loudspeaker and talk-back circuit. Hearing loss range (re: 20db SPL) was -10 to 110 db with earphones, -10 to 90 db with loudspeaker and accessory booster amplifier.
